Research & Academia

Expert Knowledge Acquisition, Dissemination & Exploration

What is the Research & Academia career cluster?

Bridging the realms of higher education and research in general, the Research & Academia cluster examines professional prospects at colleges and universities, in addition to other research-engaged organizations.

A wide variety of careers are available in academia, most notably in student services, including academic advising, residential life, student activities, study abroad, career services, and financial aid. For aspiring Ph.D. earners, dozens to hundreds of plum professor, assistant professor, adjunct professor, and administrative leadership positions exist at every institution of higher learning, but hiring is almost always extremely competitive.

If research is your thing, most industries now offer ample opportunities, from publishing to technology to entertainment to retail. Of course, more traditional researcher roles are also available, mainly in for-profit laboratories and at universities, based in both the “hard” and “soft” sciences.
